The Story of Lingodbhava

Once Brahma the creator and Vishnu the preserver fell to disputing which of them was greater. As they argued, a boundless pillar of fire and light appeared before them, stretching beyond all sight in either direction.

A voice declared that whoever first found its end was the greater. Vishnu took the form of a boar and dived downward; Brahma became a swan and flew upward. For ages they searched, yet neither could reach the top or the bottom of the endless column.

Then Lord Shiva revealed himself from within the pillar as Lingodbhava, showing that he is the beginningless, endless reality from which both creation and preservation arise. This is the origin of the worship of the Jyotirlinga, the linga of light.

The Meaning

Lingodbhava reveals Shiva as the infinite, formless ground of all existence, without beginning or end, beyond the reach of even the greatest gods. The story humbles pride and points to a reality larger than any single power. The Jyotirlinga, worshipped in twelve great shrines across India, is the sign of that boundless light.
