Why jaap works

Japa is the oldest meditation the tradition has: one mantra, repeated until the repeating mind and the wandering mind become the same mind. The count gives the practice a body, which is why the mala has 108 beads and why these films keep an honest, unhurried count for you.

How to chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times with the film

Sit comfortably, facing east or north if you can, with the spine easy and the shoulders loose. Hold the mala in the right hand over the middle finger, turning one bead with the thumb at each repetition; the index finger stays apart, and the meru, the head bead, is not crossed. Match your voice to the pace of the film rather than racing ahead: one clear, unhurried repetition per bead. If the mind wanders, do not restart the count; simply return to the sound. When the mala completes, sit for a few silent breaths before rising, and if you are keeping a vrat, offer water to the Shivling or in the direction of the rising sun. With the app open, a tap per repetition keeps the count for you, so the eyes can stay closed from the first Om to the last.

Frequently asked questions

Why 108 times?

One hundred and eight is the count of a full japa mala: 108 beads, one mantra per bead. The number runs through the tradition, from the 108 Upanishads to the 108 names of the deities, and a complete mala is held to settle the mind in a way a few repetitions cannot.

When should Om Namah Shivaya be chanted?

Any time, but Mondays are held dearest to Shiva, and the month of Sawan, Pradosh evenings and Maha Shivratri night most of all. The morning after a bath, and the evening pradosh window, are the traditional hours.

Can I chant along, or only listen?

Chanting along is the whole point: the films are paced for it, one clear repetition at a time. Listening alone is also a recognised practice (shravana), and many keep it playing during puja, study or sleep.

Is this a real voice or AI?

A real human voice, recorded without AI. That is the reason these were made: most long jaap videos online are synthetic, and the difference is audible within a minute.

Keep the count in the app. The Bhakti Angan japa counter keeps your mala count with a tap for each repetition, alongside the daily Panchang and darshan.
