The story of Ganga Dussehra
King Bhagiratha’s ancestors, the sixty thousand sons of Sagara, had been burned to ash by the anger of the sage Kapila, and could not be released until the waters of the heavenly Ganga washed over them. Bhagiratha did tapasya for a thousand years to bring her down. But the earth could not take that fall; so Shiva stood beneath her and caught the whole descent in his matted hair, and let her out in the streams that the earth could bear. She followed Bhagiratha to the sea and gave his ancestors rest. From him she is Bhagirathi, and any impossible task pursued long enough is still called a bhagirath prayatna.
Ganga Dussehra is the day of that descent, the Dashami of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha. Dus-hara means the taking away of ten: bathing in her on this day is said to wash ten kinds of wrong, three of the body, four of speech and three of the mind. Whatever is offered is offered in tens, and where the river is far away, the same sankalp is made over any water, because she is held to be present in it when called.
How Ganga Dussehra is celebrated
| Snan | a dip in the Ganga, or in any river, or water at home with her name taken ten times. |
| Ten of everything | ten flowers, ten lamps, ten fruits, ten dips, ten mantras: the number of the day is ten throughout. |
| Dana | the summer dana of water pots, fans, sattu, curd and sherbet, and of a lamp floated on the river. |
| Aarti | the Ganga aarti at the ghats in the evening, with lamps set on the water. |
Haridwar, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Rishikesh and Garhmukteshwar hold the largest fairs and evening aartis; in Uttarakhand it is kept as the day the river reached the plains; and in Bengal the parallel Dashahara is observed on the Ganga at Sagar and Nabadwip.
Frequently asked questions
When is Ganga Dussehra in 2026?
Ganga Dussehra is on Monday, May 25, 2026, the Shukla Dashami of Jyeshtha. In 2026 the Jyeshtha month repeats (Adhika Maas); most panchangs including Drik Panchang keep Ganga Dussehra on 25 May, while some traditions observe it in the second Jyeshtha on 24 June. Follow your family tradition.
What does Dussehra mean here?
Dus-hara, the taking away of ten: bathing on this day is said to remove ten kinds of wrongdoing, three of the body, four of speech and three of the mind. It is unrelated to the Vijayadashami Dussehra of Ashwina.
What if I cannot reach the Ganga?
Any river or even water at home is used, with her name taken and the sankalp made. The tradition holds that Ganga is present in whatever water is called upon with faith on this day.
Who was Bhagiratha?
The king who did tapasya for a thousand years to bring the Ganga down for the release of his ancestors. The river is called Bhagirathi after him, and the phrase bhagirath prayatna still means an effort that refuses to give up.
