The story of Gita Jayanti
Two armies stood ready at Kurukshetra, and Arjuna asked his charioteer to take him into the space between them so he could see who he was about to fight. He saw his teachers, his cousins and his grandfather, and his bow slipped from his hand. What Krishna said to him there, in seven hundred verses, on a stopped chariot between two armies that were waiting, is the Bhagavad Gita. Gita Jayanti is the day of that speaking, the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Margashirsha, which is also Mokshada Ekadashi.
The Gita is not an answer to a philosophical question but to a breakdown, and its subject is what to do when duty and grief point in opposite directions. It gathers the paths of karma, bhakti and jnana without setting one above the others, and it ends not with a command but with a choice returned to Arjuna: having heard all this, do as you think right.
