The story of Tulsi Vivah
Vrinda was devoted beyond measure to her husband Jalandhar, and her devotion made him unconquerable: while she kept her vow, no weapon could touch him. When his war threatened the worlds and no god could end him, Vishnu took the form of her husband and her vow was broken, and Jalandhar fell. Vrinda, understanding what had been done, cursed Vishnu to become stone; and then, because she was what she was, she entered the fire. From her ashes rose the tulsi plant, and Vishnu accepted her curse and took the form of the shaligram, promising that he would never again be worshipped without her leaf.
Tulsi Vivah is that wedding, kept on the Ekadashi or Dwadashi of Kartika: the tulsi in her courtyard pot is dressed as a bride in a red chunari and bangles, the shaligram is brought to her on a decorated palanquin, and a full wedding is performed with mangalashtak, a mandap of sugarcane and a family that gives her away as their own daughter. With it the four months of Chaturmas end and the marriage season of the year opens.
How Tulsi Vivah is celebrated
| The bride | the tulsi pot is cleaned, painted, and dressed with a chunari, bangles and a small mangalsutra. |
| The groom | the shaligram, or a Krishna murti, is bathed, dressed and brought to the mandap. |
| The wedding | a sugarcane mandap, mangalashtak verses, the seven rounds and kanyadan, exactly as at a family wedding. |
| Prasad | amla, sugarcane, ber and sweets are offered and the whole neighbourhood is fed. |
Maharashtra keeps it most elaborately, with a real barat and invitation cards in some households; Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh keep it in the courtyard tulsi vrindavan; and in Braj it flows into the Kartik snan and the Dev Uthani celebrations of the same days.

Vrinda, whose ashes became the tulsi, cursed Vishnu to become stone, and he accepted it as the shaligram and vowed never to be worshipped without her leaf. The wedding each year is that promise kept.
