The story of Ahoi Ashtami

A woman went to the forest to dig earth for her house and, without seeing, her spade killed a cub of the sahi, the porcupine. The mother sahi cursed her, and from that day her own children did not live. Years later she told the elders, who said: draw the sahi and her cubs on your wall, worship them, and ask the mother for forgiveness on the Ashtami of Kartika. She did, keeping the fast until the stars came out, and her children lived. That is Ahoi Ashtami, and the drawing of Ahoi Mata with her seven cubs is still made on the wall every year.

It falls eight days before Diwali and four days after Karwa Chauth, and where Karwa Chauth is kept for the husband, this vrat is kept by mothers for their children: for their life, their health and their way in the world. The fast is broken not at moonrise but at the sight of the stars, which come earlier and are kinder to a mother who has been standing all day.

How Ahoi Ashtami is celebrated

The drawingAhoi Mata with her cubs is drawn on the wall or a paper poster is put up, and worshipped in the evening.
The vratmothers keep a nirjala or fruit fast from sunrise, broken after seeing the stars.
Silver and the kalasha silver ahoi or coins are strung on a thread, and a kalash of water is kept for the Diwali puja.
Katha and blessingthe Ahoi katha is read with the family, and the children are fed and blessed before the mother eats.

It is kept most widely across Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, and in many families the vrat is broken only after seeing the moon rather than the stars, so both customs run side by side.
