The story of Vivah Panchami
Janaka had found Sita in a furrow while ploughing the field for a yagna, and he had in his house the bow of Shiva, which no one could lift. He set it as the condition: whoever strings it may marry her. Kings came and failed. Then Rama, in Mithila with Vishwamitra, walked up to it, lifted it, and it broke in his hands as he bent it. On the Panchami of the bright fortnight of Margashirsha, Rama and Sita were married at Janakpur, and Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna were married to her sisters on the same day.
Vivah Panchami is that wedding day, kept every year at Janakpur in Nepal and at Ayodhya with a full barat that travels between them. There is a tenderness in how some families in Mithila treat it: because Sita’s life after this wedding held so much exile and separation, many there will not marry their own daughters on this tithi, and keep the day for her wedding alone rather than borrowing it for their own.
