The story of Hariyali Teej
Parvati was Sati reborn, and she had chosen Shiva before she could speak his name. She went into the forest and kept tapasya through one hundred and eight births: standing in water through winter, in fire through summer, living on air and then on nothing, until the ascetic who had burned the god of love to ash opened his eyes and accepted her. Hariyali Teej is the day he granted her that boon, on the Shukla Tritiya of Shravana, and Parvati became Teej Mata, the goddess who is asked for a husband and for the long life of one already given.
The name is the season itself: hariyali, the green that arrives when the monsoon has finally broken over a burnt country. Women return to their mother’s house, hands are covered in mehndi, green bangles and green saris are worn, and swings are hung from the neem and mango trees. The vrat is kept nirjala by many, from sunrise through the night, broken only the next morning after the puja of Shiva and Parvati in sand or clay.
How Hariyali Teej is celebrated
| The vrat | kept by married women for their husbands and by unmarried girls for a good match; many keep it nirjala through the night. |
| Shringar | the sixteen adornments, mehndi, green bangles and a green sari or lehenga, and the sindhara gifts sent from the mother house. |
| Puja | Shiva and Parvati are made in clay or sand and worshipped through the night with the Teej katha and jagran. |
| Jhula | swings are hung and Teej songs are sung together, and ghewar and malpua are shared. |
Rajasthan takes out the Teej Mata procession in Jaipur and eats ghewar for a fortnight; Haryana, Punjab and western Uttar Pradesh keep it as the swing festival of the monsoon; and Kajari Teej and Hartalika Teej follow in the same season, so families keep whichever their line has always kept.

Frequently asked questions
When is Hariyali Teej in 2027?
Hariyali Teej is on Wednesday, August 4, 2027, the Shukla Tritiya of Shravana.
What is the difference between Hariyali, Kajari and Hartalika Teej?
All three honour Parvati within about a month. Hariyali Teej falls in the bright fortnight of Shravana, Kajari Teej in the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada, and Hartalika Teej in the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada. Families keep the one their region and line follow.
Can unmarried girls keep the Teej vrat?
Yes. Parvati won Shiva through her own tapasya, so the vrat is kept by unmarried girls for a good husband as much as by married women for the long life of theirs.
Why is green worn on Hariyali Teej?
Green is the colour of the monsoon that has just arrived and of new life returning to the fields; it is also held dear to Parvati. Green bangles, green clothing and mehndi together carry the whole meaning of the day.
