The story of Vasant Panchami
When Brahma had made the worlds he found them silent: there was form everywhere and no sound, no word, no music. From his mind rose a goddess with a veena, white robed and seated on a lotus, and when she touched the strings the world received speech, rhythm and knowledge. She is Saraswati, and Vasant Panchami, the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Magha, is kept as her day of appearing.
It is also the first day of spring in the Indian reckoning: the mustard is in flower across the north and the fields turn the same yellow that people wear. Children are given their first letters on this day, students place their books and instruments before the goddess, and nothing is begun in the arts without her. In Braj the day begins the forty days that end in Holi, and the first gulal of the year is offered at the temples.
How Vasant Panchami is celebrated

Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Bihar keep it as Saraswati Puja with pandals and school celebrations, and hand children their first letters at hate khori; Punjab flies kites on Basant; and Braj offers the first gulal of the season, opening the long approach to Holi.
