The story of Shani Jayanti
Shani is the son of Surya and Chhaya. The kathas say his mother kept a tapasya through her pregnancy so severe that the child was born dark, and that Surya, seeing him, doubted he was his own; the son looked back at his father with a gaze so heavy that Surya’s own light dimmed. From that came the dread of Shani drishti, and also its meaning: he is not cruelty but exactness, the graha who gives back precisely what was done, neither more nor less, however long it takes to arrive.
Brahma made him the graha of karma and the judge of the nine, and he is the slowest of them, taking about thirty years to circle the zodiac; sade sati, his seven and a half year passage, is long for the same reason. Shani Jayanti is his appearance day, on the Amavasya of Jyeshtha, kept above all by those going through sade sati or dhaiya. What he is said to want is not appeasement but conduct: work done honestly, elders and workers treated well, and something given to those with less.
