Lord Hanuman · From the Ramayana
Hanuman and the Sanjeevaniसंजीवनी
When Lakshmana lay dying on the battlefield, Hanuman carried an entire mountain to save him.
During the great war in Lanka, Lakshmana, the beloved brother of Lord Rama, was struck down and lay near death. The only cure was the Sanjeevani herb, which grew far away upon a mountain in the Himalayas, and it had to be brought before dawn.
Hanuman, the mighty devotee of Rama, leapt into the sky and flew across the land to the distant mountain. But when he arrived, he could not tell which of the many glowing herbs was the Sanjeevani.
Rather than risk choosing wrongly, Hanuman simply lifted the entire mountain upon his palm and flew back through the night, reaching the battlefield in time. The herb was found, Lakshmana was revived, and Hanuman’s devotion once again proved that for the servant of the Lord, nothing is impossible.
The Moral
The story of the Sanjeevani is the supreme example of devotion in action. Hanuman’s love for Rama gave him strength beyond measure and a heart that would attempt anything. He teaches that selfless service, fearless effort and unwavering loyalty can accomplish what seems impossible, and that true power is devotion put to work.
