Sudama had studied beside Krishna in the ashram of Sandipani, and they had loved each other as boys do. Years later Krishna was king in Dwarka and Sudama was a brahmin so poor that his children cried for food. His wife, who would not ask for herself, asked him to go to his friend, and tied into a corner of his cloth the only gift they had: a small bundle of poha, beaten rice, begged from a neighbour.

At the palace gates the guards saw a thin man in a torn dhoti and hesitated. Krishna heard his name, ran out barefoot, and embraced him in front of the whole court. He seated Sudama on his own couch, washed his friend’s cracked feet with his own hands and with tears, and asked after his mother, his studies, his wife. Sudama kept his hand closed over the little bundle. He could not bring himself to give it.

Krishna saw it, took it from him by force, and ate a handful, delighted, and reached for a second; Rukmini caught his wrist, and the reaching was already enough. Sudama went home with nothing given to him and nothing asked, ashamed of his own smallness, and found where his hut had stood a house of light, and his wife adorned like a queen, and his children fed.

The Moral

Sudama never asks. That is the whole story. He walks all that way carrying a gift so poor he is ashamed of it, and it is exactly that gift, given without a request attached, that is received with the most joy in all of scripture. The tradition puts it plainly: what you bring matters less than what you bring it with, and grace answers the heart that did not bargain.
