Hanuman Chalisa with Meaningश्री हनुमान चालीसा
Every doha and chaupai of Goswami Tulsidas’s Chalisa, with transliteration, meaning and our verse by verse videos.
The Hanuman Chalisa is 40 chaupais in praise of Hanuman, written by Goswami Tulsidas in Awadhi. 2 dohas open it and 1 closes it. It is one of the most widely recited prayers in Hindu homes, and for many families the first one a child learns by heart.
Below, every verse is given in Devanagari with an English transliteration, its meaning and a short note on its bhav. Where we have made a video on a verse, it plays beside it. Tap Text only to hide the meanings and read the Chalisa straight through for path.
Any day is right for the Chalisa. Tuesdays and Saturdays are kept for Hanuman, and the morning after a bath and the evening lamp are the traditional hours. On Hanuman Jayanti, next on Tuesday, 20 April 2027 in India, many devotees recite it again and again through the day.
Opening dohas
Doha 1

बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि॥
Shriguru charan saroj raj, nij manu mukuru sudhari.
Baranaun Raghubar bimal jasu, jo dayaku phal chari.
Cleaning the mirror of my mind with the dust of my Guru’s lotus feet, I sing the spotless glory of Shri Rama, which grants the four fruits of life: dharma, artha, kama and moksha.
Tulsidas begins not with his own skill but with the dust of his Guru’s feet.

Doha 2
बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार।
बल बुधि बिद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेस बिकार॥
Buddhiheen tanu janike, sumiraun Pavan-kumar.
Bal budhi bidya dehu mohin, harahu kalesa bikar.
Knowing myself to be without wisdom, I remember Hanuman, son of the Wind. Grant me strength, wisdom and knowledge, and take away my sorrows and flaws.
Notice the order: first he admits his own lack, then he asks.
