ॐ हं पञ्चमुख हनुमते नमःThe Story of Panchamukhi Hanuman
Panchamukhi Hanuman is the mighty five-faced form that Lord Hanuman assumed in the Ramayana to defeat the sorcerer Mahiravana, who could be slain only by extinguishing five lamps in five directions at once.
His five faces are those of Hanuman the monkey, Narasimha the lion, Garuda the eagle, Varaha the boar and Hayagriva the horse, each turned to a direction, each a guardian power, together watching over all the worlds.
The Meaning
Panchamukhi Hanuman is the all-encompassing protector, guarding the devotee from every direction and every danger. The form gathers the powers of the great avatars into Hanuman’s boundless devotion, and is revered for protection, courage and the removal of fear.
