Chapter 17 of 18

Three Kinds of Faith

Arjuna asks about people who worship with faith but outside the rules of scripture. Krishna explains that faith takes the shape of a person’s nature, and shows how food, sacrifice, austerity and giving each take three forms. He closes with Om Tat Sat, the threefold name of the Absolute, and the need for faith in every act.

yaṣṭavyam eveti manaḥ samādhāya sa sāttvikaḥ.

Live it todayDo the right thing because it is right, not for what it brings.

Bhagavad Gita 17.12

ijyate bharata-śreṣṭha taṁ yajñaṁ viddhi rājasam.

Live it todayNotice when a good deed is really about being seen.

Bhagavad Gita 17.13

svādhyāyābhyasanaṁ caiva vāṅ-mayaṁ tapa ucyate.

aphalākāṅkṣibhir yuktaiḥ sāttvikaṁ paricakṣate.

This threefold austerity, practiced with the highest faith by steadfast people who seek no reward, is called sattvic.

Live it todayPractice with faith, not for a reward, and the practice itself becomes pure.

Bhagavad Gita 17.18

sat-kāra-māna-pūjārthaṁ tapo dambhena caiva yat,
kriyate tad iha proktaṁ rājasaṁ calam adhruvam.

Live it todayDiscipline kept for praise fades as soon as the praise does.

Bhagavad Gita 17.19

deśe kāle ca pātre ca tad dānaṁ sāttvikaṁ smṛtam.

Live it todayThe purest giving expects nothing back, not even thanks.

Bhagavad Gita 17.21

yat tu pratyupakārārthaṁ phalam uddiśya vā punaḥ,
dīyate ca parikliṣṭaṁ tad dānaṁ rājasaṁ smṛtam.

But a gift given to get something back, or with an eye on some reward, or given grudgingly, is held to be rajasic.

Live it todayIf you give, give gladly; a grudging gift loses its grace.

Bhagavad Gita 17.22

adeśa-kāle yad dānam apātrebhyaś ca dīyate,
asat-kṛtam avajñātaṁ tat tāmasam udāhṛtam.

A gift given at the wrong place and time, to unworthy recipients, without respect or with contempt, is declared tamasic.

Live it todayWhatever you give, give with respect; contempt spoils the gift.

oṁ tat sad iti nirdeśo brahmaṇas tri-vidhaḥ smṛtaḥ,

pravartante vidhānoktāḥ satataṁ brahma-vādinām.

Live it todayBegin each task with Om, and let the work become an offering.

Bhagavad Gita 17.25

tad ity anabhisandhāya phalaṁ yajña-tapaḥ-kriyāḥ,
dāna-kriyāś ca vividhāḥ kriyante mokṣa-kāṅkṣibhiḥ.

yajñe tapasi dāne ca sthitiḥ sad iti cocyate,
karma caiva tad-arthīyaṁ sad ity evābhidhīyate.

Steadfastness in sacrifice, austerity and giving is also called Sat, and any action done for the sake of the Supreme is likewise called Sat.

Live it todayStaying steady in giving and discipline is itself something sacred.

Bhagavad Gita 17.28

aśraddhayā hutaṁ dattaṁ tapas taptaṁ kṛtaṁ ca yat,
asad ity ucyate pārtha na ca tat pretya no iha.

Without faith, whatever is offered, given or done, and whatever austerity is practiced, is called asat, O Partha. It is of no worth here or hereafter.

Live it todayWhatever you do today, put your faith into it, or it stays hollow.
