Tara, the second Mahavidya, is the goddess who ferries the soul across, the star that guides through darkness and the saviouress who answers in moments of utmost peril. Closely akin to Kali, she is fierce yet supremely compassionate.
It is said that when Shiva drank the world-poison at the churning of the ocean, it was Tara who took him to her as a mother and saved him, the power that protects even the protector.
The Meaning
Tara is the compassion that reaches the devotee in the deepest darkness and carries them to the farther shore. Her name means both star and the act of crossing over. She teaches that grace is nearest when the danger is greatest, and that the Mother never abandons her child.
