The Story of Skandamata

Skandamata is the Goddess as the loving mother of Skanda, Lord Kartikeya, the commander of the divine armies. She is shown holding the infant Skanda upon her lap, seated upon a lotus, a lion at her side.

In her the fierce power of the Goddess is joined with the tenderness of a mother, worshipped on the fifth night of Navratri.

The Meaning

Skandamata embodies the protective, nurturing love of the Divine Mother. She teaches that the same power that destroys evil also cradles her children with infinite tenderness, and she blesses devotees with wisdom and well-being.
