Mahavidya · Fifth of the Ten
Bhairaviभैरवी
The fierce goddess of spiritual fire and transformation.
ॐ ह्रीं भैरव्यै नमःThe Story of Bhairavi
Bhairavi, the fifth Mahavidya, is the fierce consort of Bhairava, the goddess of tapas, the inner fire of spiritual discipline that burns away impurity. Resplendent and terrible, she is the heat that ripens the seeker.
She is the power of decay and transformation at work in all things, the force that wears down the old so the new may arise, and the burning aspiration that drives the soul toward the divine.
The Meaning
Bhairavi is the sacred fire of transformation, the tapas that destroys the dross and reveals the gold. She teaches that the spiritual path asks for heat and intensity, and that what feels like destruction is the burning away of all that stands between the soul and the Self.
