The story of Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya means that which never diminishes. On this Tritiya of Vaishakha, whatever is begun, given or gained is held to keep growing rather than wear away. The kathas gather around that one idea: Krishna gave Sudama, who had come with a handful of beaten rice, a wealth that never ran out; Vishnu took the Parashurama avatar on this day; Ved Vyasa began dictating the Mahabharata to Ganesha; and the Ganga came down to the earth.

The best known katha is of the Pandavas in exile: Draupadi, unable to feed the guests who kept arriving, was given the Akshaya Patra by Surya, a vessel that would not empty until she herself had eaten. That is the meaning the day keeps: not hoarding, but a supply that lasts because it is being given away. It is also one of the three and a half abujh muhurats, needing no further reckoning, which is why so many weddings, griha pravesh and new ventures are begun on it.

How Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated

Danathe heart of the day: water pots, fans, sattu, curd, fruit, clothes and food given to those who need them.
PujaVishnu and Lakshmi are worshipped together, with tulsi, yellow flowers and the Vishnu Sahasranama.
Buying goldgold is bought as a symbol of what does not diminish; the older custom is to give as much as you buy.
New beginningsan abujh muhurat: weddings, griha pravesh, new account books and new work are all started without further reckoning.

Odisha begins the paddy sowing and the building of the Rath Yatra chariots on this day; Jains keep it as the fast breaking of Rishabhdev with sugarcane juice; Bengal opens the Haal Khata, the new account book; and at Badrinath the temple doors are often opened around it.

Frequently asked questions

When is Akshaya Tritiya in 2026?

Akshaya Tritiya is on Sunday, April 19, 2026, the Shukla Tritiya of Vaishakha.

Is a muhurat needed to buy gold or start work?

No. Akshaya Tritiya is an abujh muhurat, one of the three and a half days in the year that are auspicious throughout and need no separate reckoning. Some still prefer the morning hours; the daily Panchang gives the choghadiya for your city.

Must gold be bought on Akshaya Tritiya?

No. The day is about what does not diminish, and the older practice is dana rather than purchase. Giving food, water and clothes carries the meaning fully; gold is one custom among many, not the requirement.

What is the Akshaya Patra?

The vessel Surya gave Draupadi in the forest, which produced food without end each day until she ate from it herself. It is the image the whole festival rests on: abundance that lasts as long as it is being shared.
