The story of Radha Ashtami
Fifteen days after Krishna was born in a prison at midnight, Radha appeared at midday in Barsana, found by Vrishabhanu on a lotus in the Yamuna. It is said she did not open her eyes at all until Yashoda brought the infant Krishna to her, and that the first thing she ever saw was him. In Braj she is not his consort so much as his own power in a separate body: what the tradition calls hladini shakti, the capacity for joy that belongs to him and stands in front of him as her.
That is why the name comes first: Radha Krishna, never the other way, and why in Braj the greeting is Radhe Radhe. Krishna is said to answer more readily to her name than to his own. Radha Ashtami is her appearance day on the Shukla Ashtami of Bhadrapada, and in Barsana the Ladli Ji temple keeps it as the greatest day of its year, with the abhishek performed at midday, the hour she came.
