The story of Krishna Janmashtami
A prophecy told the tyrant Kansa of Mathura that the eighth child of his sister Devaki would end him. He chained Devaki and Vasudeva in his prison and killed each newborn; but on the eighth, on a storm-black Ashtami midnight of Bhadrapada, the locks opened by themselves and the guards slept. Vasudeva carried the newborn Krishna across the flooding Yamuna, the river parting at the touch of his feet while Shesha Naga held his hoods as an umbrella, and left him in Gokul with Yashoda and Nanda.
That is why Janmashtami is kept awake until midnight: the hour of the birth itself. The vrat is broken after the midnight abhishek of the infant Krishna, rocked in a flower-decked cradle. He grew to steal butter, tame Kaliya, lift Govardhan, speak the Gita and end Kansa: the whole of that life begins in this one prison-to-cradle night.
