The story of Dhanteras
When the devas and asuras churned the ocean of milk, the last and greatest of what rose from it was Dhanvantari, physician of the gods, carrying the pot of amrita. He is an avatar of Vishnu and the source of Ayurveda, and Dhanteras is his appearance day: Dhanvantari Jayanti, kept as the National Ayurveda Day. The full Samudra Manthan katha is here. That is why the day belongs first to health, and only then to wealth: the physician came out of the same ocean as Lakshmi, and two days before her.
The second katha is of a young king whose horoscope said he would die on the fourth night of his marriage. His wife let him sleep not at all: she piled all her gold and silver at the door, lit lamps everywhere and told stories and sang through the night. When Yama came as a serpent, the blaze of the metal and the lamps blinded him, and he sat on the heap listening until dawn, and left without the king. From that night come the lamps of Dhanteras and the Yama deepdan set facing south.
How Dhanteras is celebrated

Maharashtra keeps it as Dhanatrayodashi with a bhog of dry coriander and jaggery; the trading communities of Gujarat and Rajasthan weigh and worship their wealth; and across India it is now also observed as National Ayurveda Day for Dhanvantari.
