The story of Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima is also Vyasa Purnima, the appearance day of Ved Vyasa, who divided the one Veda into four so that it could be carried by ordinary memory, composed the Mahabharata, and gave the Puranas their form. Every teacher who has passed something down sits in his line, which is why the seat a teacher occupies is still called the vyasapeetha.
The word itself is the teaching: gu, darkness, and ru, the one who removes it. On this Ashadha Purnima the Buddha is said to have given his first sermon at Sarnath, and Shiva as Adi Guru to have begun teaching the seven rishis; so the day belongs to the Vedic, Buddhist and Jain traditions alike. It is kept not by asking for anything, but by going to whoever taught you and saying so.
How Guru Purnima is celebrated

Buddhists keep it as Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Day for the first sermon at Sarnath; the Jains keep it as the day Mahavira took his first disciple; Nepal keeps it as Guru Purnima in schools for teachers; and in Maharashtra the Dattatreya and Sai Baba centres see the largest gatherings.

Flowers, fruit, a garland and whatever dakshina is within your means, offered with the feet touched. In many traditions the more valued offering is a report of what you have done with what you were taught.
