The story of Dev Uthani Ekadashi

On Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha, Vishnu goes to sleep on Shesha in the ocean of milk, and the four months of Chaturmas begin: the monsoon, when sadhus stop travelling and stay in one place, when weddings and griha pravesh are set aside, and when the year turns inward. On the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Kartika he wakes. That is Dev Uthani, also called Prabodhini and Devutthana Ekadashi, and the household wakes him: the courtyard is drawn with rangoli, a conch is blown, and everyone calls out uthiye Deva, baithiye Deva.

With that waking the auspicious season returns. The wedding season opens on this day and runs through the winter, Tulsi Vivah follows immediately, and the four months of restraint end. It is one of the very few days in the calendar whose whole meaning is a beginning that had to be waited for.

How Dev Uthani Ekadashi is celebrated

Waking the lordat dusk the courtyard is cleaned and drawn with rangoli, a conch and bell are sounded, and Vishnu is called to wake.
The vratan Ekadashi fast without grains, broken at the parana next morning; many keep the whole night in bhajan.
Sugarcane and seasonal fruitsugarcane, singhara, amla and ber, the first of the season, are offered before anyone eats them.
Tulsithe tulsi is decorated for the Tulsi Vivah that follows in the next day or two.

The North calls it Dev Uthani or Devotthan Gyaras and treats it as the day the wedding season opens; Maharashtra and Karnataka keep it as Prabodhini Ekadashi with the Pandharpur yatra; and Braj keeps it alongside the Kartik snan that ends the same week.
