Choghadiya Today in Detroit
Today’s choghadiya for Detroit, Michigan, worked out from Detroit’s own sunrise and sunset in Eastern Time (America/Detroit). Hindu life in Metro Detroit grew from a 1975 meeting of thirty people at the Northwood Inn in Royal Oak into the Bharatiya Temple on 18 acres in Troy, inaugurated in 1981, and now reaches Canton’s 2010 temple, the Telugu community’s granite Sri Venkateswara Temple in Novi and the Hare Krishna temple in the 1928 Fisher Mansion on Grayhaven Canal. Detroit’s clock runs 9 hours 30 minutes to 10 hours 30 minutes behind India’s, so some festivals fall a day earlier here than in India.

Why a date can differ: a tithi (lunar day) begins at the same instant everywhere on earth, but a festival is kept on the local day when its tithi holds at the right moment, such as sunrise or moonrise. Detroit keeps a different clock from India, so that moment can land on a different calendar day here. For festivals not listed, see the festival calendar.
