The Story of Krishna

Krishna was born at midnight in a prison in Mathura to free the world from the tyrant Kamsa, and was carried in secret to Gokul, where he grew among the cowherds. His childhood is a treasury of wonder and play: stealing butter, lifting Mount Govardhan on a single finger to shelter the village, and dancing with the gopis to the call of his flute.

As a youth he returned to Mathura, ended the cruel reign of Kamsa, and in time became a prince and a peerless statesman, friend and guide to the Pandavas.

On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, when the warrior Arjuna faltered, Krishna as his charioteer spoke the Bhagavad Gita, the song of duty, devotion and the deathless Self, a teaching that has guided seekers ever since.

The Meaning

Krishna, the eighth Dashavatar, is the most intimate and complete of avatars, divine yet utterly approachable as child, friend and beloved. Through his play he teaches joy, through his counsel wisdom, and through the Gita he reveals the path of action without attachment and love without limit. To remember Krishna is to be drawn into both delight and the deepest knowledge.
