Second Avatar of Vishnu · Dashavatar
Kurmaकूर्म
The Cosmic Tortoise who bore a mountain so the nectar of immortality could be won.
ॐ कूर्माय नमःThe Story of Kurma
When the gods had lost their strength and fortune, they sought the amrita, the nectar of immortality, hidden in the depths of the ocean of milk. To win it, gods and asuras agreed to churn the sea together, using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the great serpent Vasuki as the rope.
But as they churned, the mountain began to sink into the soft ocean floor. Lord Vishnu descended as Kurma, an immense tortoise, and slipped beneath Mount Mandara, bearing its entire weight upon his back so the churning could go on.
For ages they churned, and the ocean gave up its treasures, and at last the nectar of immortality rose to the surface. Through it all the patient tortoise held firm, the still centre on which the whole cosmic effort turned.
The Meaning
Kurma, the second Dashavatar, is the steady foundation beneath every great endeavour. The story teaches that even the loftiest goal needs a patient, unseen support, and that the divine is willing to bear the weight of the world so that good may prevail. The tortoise, drawing its senses inward, is also the meditative mind, unshaken while the world churns around it.
