Choghadiya Today in Ahmedabad
Today’s choghadiya for Ahmedabad, Gujarat, worked out from Ahmedabad’s own sunrise and sunset in India Standard Time (Asia/Kolkata). Devotion in Ahmedabad runs from the Jagannath temple at Jamalpur, whose Rath Yatra has set out every Ashadhi Bij since 1878, and the Kalupur mandir, which the Swaminarayan Sampraday calls its first temple, to Akshardham in Gandhinagar and nine nights of Navratri garba.

Why a date can differ: a tithi (lunar day) begins at the same instant everywhere on earth, but a festival is kept on the local day when its tithi holds at the right moment, such as sunrise or moonrise. Ahmedabad’s sunrise and moonrise come at different minutes from Delhi’s, so now and then that moment lands on a different calendar day here. For festivals not listed, see the festival calendar.

Hindu temples in and around Ahmedabad
Mandirs across the Ahmedabad area, from the city to the suburbs. Check each temple’s website for darshan hours and its festival programme.
Shree Jagannathji Mandir
The temple says the sadhu Hanumandasji first installed a Hanuman idol on this once forested bank of the Sabarmati, and that his successor Sarangdasji, after a vision at Puri, installed Jagannath, Baldevji and Subhadraji, turning the Maruti shrine into the Jagannath temple; the complex was renovated from 1996 to 2000 and the deities now sit on a raised Ratna Vedi.
Shree Swaminarayan Mandir, Kalupur
The temple says it was the first shrine of the Swaminarayan Sampraday, built on land gifted by the British government by Anandanand Swami, whom Lord Swaminarayan personally entrusted with the work, carved in Burma teak, and opened on 24 February 1822.
BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Shahibaug
BAPS says Shastriji Maharaj acquired a bungalow here in 1948, lived in it and wished for an Akshar-Purushottam mandir on the site, and that a Charanarvind chhatri on the campus marks a spot Bhagwan Swaminarayan passed on his way to bathe in the Sabarmati.
Swaminarayan Akshardham, Gandhinagar
BAPS says Pramukh Swami Maharaj laid the foundation of the stone monument in 1979 and inaugurated the Akshardham complex on the festival day of Labh Pancham in 1992, followed by a grand public ceremony on 2 November.
ISKCON Ahmedabad, Sri Sri Radha Govind Dham
ISKCON’s Back to Godhead magazine reported in its September 1997 issue that the 25,000-square-foot temple on four acres, which blends Sompura (Gujarat) and Rajasthani styles, had been inaugurated that April and drew more than three hundred thousand visitors in its first month.
Hare Krishna Mandir, Bhadaj
The temple says it opened in April 2015 after Hare Krishna Movement Ahmedabad began in 2008 in a rented bungalow in Thaltej, that it gives free khichdi prasadam to every visitor daily, and that its campus houses an Akshaya Patra kitchen serving mid-day meals to over one lakh government school children.
Bhadrakali Mata Temple
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation says Bhadra Fort, part of the oldest enclave of the city founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411, takes its name from the Bhadra Kali temple inside, which was added in the Maratha period.
Shree Camp Hanuman Mandir
Ahmedabad Mirror reported in 2024 that the temple, whose idol devotees believe manifested on its own, stands inside the Shahibaug cantonment, draws thousands of worshippers on Saturdays, and had its lease renewed by the Army’s Western Command for another 30 years, ending talk of moving it to the riverfront.
Kala Ramji Mandir
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation says the temple is named for its seated images of Rama, Sita and Hanuman carved from kasoti, a precious black stone, which legend says a pious man named Hariprasad found buried in the ground, and that the shrine is said to date from medieval times.
Manek Baba Samadhi (Manek Baba Temple)
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation says the 15th-century saint Maneknath took samadhi here, that legend credits him with guiding where the city’s fort was placed, and that Manek Chowk’s traders believe the shrine brings prosperity to the square’s bullion, jewellery, clothing and food markets.
Festival traditions in Ahmedabad
- Mahant Narsinhdasji introduced Ahmedabad’s Rath Yatra in 1878, and every Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya (Ashadhi Bij) the procession leaves the Jagannath temple led by 15 to 20 decorated elephants, halts at Saraspur, where local people feed the whole entourage, and returns to the temple in the evening. (Shree Jagannathji Mandir, Ahmedabad)
- In 2023 UNESCO inscribed Garba of Gujarat on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, describing it as a ritual and devotional Navaratri dance performed around a perforated earthenware pot lit with an oil lamp, or an image of the mother goddess Amba. (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage)
- Gujarat Tourism names Ahmedabad and Vadodara as the most sought-after places to celebrate Navratri, and says every garba circle centres on a small Goddess shrine with a garbo, an earthenware pot holding a betel nut, coconut and silver coin, set up on the first day of Ashwin. (Gujarat Tourism, Government of Gujarat)
- For Uttarayan, Patang Bazaar, the kite market that springs up in Ahmedabad’s old city, stays open 24 hours a day through the week before the festival, when families take to their rooftops from before dawn to fly kites and share undhiyu. (Gujarat Tourism, Government of Gujarat)
- On Diwali the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Ahmedabad traditionally performs Chopda Pujan, the annual sanctifying of account books, chanting a Mahapuja and then showering sanctified rose petals, rice grains and abil-gulal on devotees’ books. (BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha)
