Bull Temple (Dodda Basavana Gudi)
Karnataka Tourism dates it to 1537, in the reign of Kempe Gowda I, with a Nandi carved from a single granite rock that stands 15 feet tall and about 20 to 21 feet long; the Dodda Ganapathi temple is a short walk away in the same complex, the Kadalekai Parishe groundnut fair is held around it in the month of Karthika, and the temple is open 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM every day.
Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple
The CPREEC eco-heritage site describes a rock-cut cave shrine with 9th-century origins extended by Kempegowda I in the 16th century, monolithic sun and moon discs in its court, and a design that lets the evening sun light the linga for about an hour, which it places at the winter solstice and Incredible India at Makara Sankranti, when the rays pass between Nandi’s horns onto the idol.
Sri Radha Krishna-Chandra Mandir (ISKCON Bangalore)
The temple’s site announces Deepotsava from 26 October to 24 November 2026, Govardhana Puja on 10 November 2026 and Vaikuntha Ekadashi on 20 December 2026; Karnataka Tourism lists it as the Sri Radha Krishna-Chandra Mandir on Hare Krishna Hill, and Incredible India describes shrines to Krishna, Radha, Govinda and Narasimha across several acres in the north of the city.
Ragigudda Anjaneya Temple
Incredible India dates its construction to 1969 and registration to 1972, on a knoll once covered in ragi; it tells of Sudharma’s heap of fresh ragi turning to stone when she was forbidden to give it to three visiting sages, who stayed on as stone pillars of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and lists a 12-day Hanuman Jayanti and a multi-day Brahmotsavam; open 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Banashankari Amma Temple
Karnataka Tourism calls it a historic urban shrine on the Kanakapura Road side of the city and names Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays as the days held especially auspicious for worship there.
Dharmaraya Swamy Temple
Karnataka Tourism names it the starting point of the Bengaluru Karaga, which begins on the full moon of Chaitra: in 2026 the festival opened on 26 March with the main night procession on 1 April, led by a priest in female attire while the Thigalars performed swordplay, and halting as every year at the tomb of an 18th-century Muslim saint.
Kote Venkataramana Swamy Temple
Incredible India’s survey of the city’s shrines records it as erected in the 1600s by Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar in a blend of Dravidian and Vijayanagara styles, its carvings showing animals and scenes from the epics, with Vaikunta Ekadashi drawing its largest crowds.
Someshwara Temple, Halasuru
Incredible India describes a hall carried on forty-eight carved pillars and a colossal single pillar, in a style resembling Vijayanagara work, while suggesting the Cholas may have been the first builders.
Kadu Malleshwara Temple
Incredible India places it in the north of the city, built in the Dravidian style more than 200 years ago, and explains the name: ‘kadu’ is forest, so Malleshwara here is the lord of the forest.
Suryanarayana Temple, Domlur
Incredible India records a temple given solely to the Sun god, its idol brought ceremonially from Badrinath, with carvings in the Chola manner and its largest crowds on Ratha Saptami.
Festival traditions in Bengaluru
- Census 2011 counted 9,621,551 people in Bangalore district, 80.29 percent of them Hindu, with Muslims (12.97 percent) and Christians (5.25 percent) the next largest groups. (Census 2011 district tables)
- The Kadalekai Parishe of 2025 ran for five days from 17 to 21 November along Bull Temple Road and Gandhi Bazaar in Basavanagudi, around the last Monday of Karthika, keeping the vow of farmers who once offered their first groundnut crop to the Nandi of the Bull Temple after a bull was blamed for raiding their fields. - The Bengaluru Karaga of 2026 began on 26 March and its main procession went out from the Dharmaraya Swamy Temple in Nagarathpete on the night of 1 April, the Thigalars marking Draupadi’s promised yearly return as Adishakti after she created the Veera Kumaras to fight Timirasura. - For Deepavali on 31 October 2024 Vidhana Soudha and Raj Bhavan were lit up along with homes, temples and public spaces across Bengaluru, and two days later, on 2 November, Karnataka kept Bali Padyami as the festival’s fourth day, with temples decorated in rangoli and lamps and a clay or cow-dung image of King Bali set up at homes.
