Why a date can differ: a tithi (lunar day) begins at the same instant everywhere on earth, but a festival is kept on the local day when its tithi holds at the right moment, such as sunrise or moonrise. Mumbai’s sunrise and moonrise come at different minutes from Delhi’s, so now and then that moment lands on a different calendar day here. For festivals not listed, see the festival calendar.

Hindu temples in and around Mumbai
Mandirs across the Mumbai area, from the city to the suburbs. Check each temple’s website for darshan hours and its festival programme.
Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir
The temple trust says it was first consecrated on Thursday 19 November 1801, and its black stone idol is notable for a trunk that turns to the right.
Shree Mumbadevi Mandir
The temple says Mumbai takes its name from Goddess Mumbadevi, whom the Koli fishermen, among the city’s early inhabitants, honour as their guardian, and that the shrine was built in the 18th century.
Shri Mahalakshmi Temple
BMC’s Mumbai Legacy Project ties the temple’s founding to the Hornby Vellard reclamation, when idols long submerged in Worli Creek were recovered, and names Navratri in Ashwin as its peak season.
Babulnath Mandir
The temple trust says the present hilltop Shiva temple was begun in 1836 after a court ruling in its favour, and BMC’s Mumbai Legacy Project notes that devotees climb 108 steps to reach it, with crowds peaking on Mahashivratri and Shravan Mondays.
Walkeshwar Temple and Banganga Tank
BMC’s Mumbai Legacy Project says the name joins ‘valuka’ (sand) and ‘Ishwar’ from the legend of Rama’s sand lingam, that the temple was revived in 1715 under Rama Kamath, and that the adjoining Banganga Tank has steps given by the Silhara dynasty in 1127.
ISKCON Juhu, Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari Temple
The marble temple complex near Juhu beach opened in 1978, and the temple says its presiding Deities were personally installed by ISKCON founder A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.
ISKCON Chowpatty, Sri Sri Radha Gopinath Temple
The campus includes a heritage Sri Sri Lakshmi Narayan shrine whose worship ISKCON took over and renovated in 1995, and the temple says it was nurtured under the guidance of HH Radhanath Swami.
BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Dadar
BAPS says the three-spired pink stone mandir opposite Dadar Central station was opened by Pramukh Swami Maharaj in December 1983, four years after he laid its foundation stone on 22 November 1979.
Lord Subramania Temple (Sri Subramania Samaj)
Maharashtra’s Lok Bhavan described it in 2024 as one of the biggest and oldest Lord Murugan temples in Mumbai, then marking its platinum jubilee, and a 1973 Income Tax notification recognised it as a place of public worship of renown throughout Maharashtra.
Gamdevi Temple
BMC’s Mumbai Legacy Project says the Gamdevi neighbourhood is named after this temple to the goddess who guards the locality, and a marble plaque records that its deepmala was built in Margashirsha 1844.
