Hanuman Mandir, Aliganj
The Lucknow district site tells how the idol, found at Islamabadi and carried on an elephant that refused to go beyond Aliganj, was installed on the western bank of the Gomti on a saint’s advice, with land given by the Mahmoodabad estate; devotees of many faiths gather every Tuesday of Jyeshtha for the Bade Mangal Mela, and the neighbourhood is named for Aliya Begum.
Mankameshwar Mahadev Mandir
The Vedanta Bharati Trust’s page describes it as one of the most ancient Shiva temples of the Ganga-Gomti corridor, its Shivalinga believed to have been installed by Lakshman after leaving Sita at Valmiki’s ashram, rebuilt by King Navdhanu, destroyed in the 12th century and restored by the Naga sadhus of the Juna Akhara, in whose reconstruction it stands.
Sri Sri Radha Raman Bihari Mandir (ISKCON Lucknow)
ISKCON News reported the Bhumi Puja for the new temple on 16 May 2010, the day after that year’s Rath Yatra, on five acres in the Sushant Golf City township on Sultanpur Road; the ISKCON directory lists the temple as Sri Sri Radha Raman Bihariji Mandir with daily aratis and classes on the Bhagavatam and the Gita.
Hanuman Garhi (Bade Hanuman), Naimisharanya
The Sitapur district site describes a 12-foot stone Hanuman carrying Rama and Lakshman on his shoulders, on a mount about 500 metres from Chakratirtha, called Dakshineshwar because the deity faces south, with the temple’s theme Hanuman’s emergence from Patal Lok.
Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple, Naimisharanya
The district site calls it one of the ancient temples of Naimish and the only Hanuman temple in the region with a five-faced idol, where Hanuman is worshipped as the servant and protector of Maa Lalita Devi.
Lalita Devi Temple, Naimisharanya
The Sitapur district site counts it among the 51 Shakti Peethas and calls Lalita Devi the presiding deity of Naimisharanya, with elephant statues flanking the entrance; open to devotees from morning to evening.
Vyas Gaddi, Naimisharanya
The district site describes the seat where Ved Vyas is said to have composed the Puranas, the Gita and the Mahabharata and taught Jaimini, Sukadeva and Soota, under a banyan tree the site calls more than 5,000 years old, which devotees circle and tie a kalava to; a three-foot statue of Vyas sits on a mound reached by ten to twelve steps.
Festival traditions in Lucknow
- Census 2011 counted 4,589,838 people in Lucknow district, 77.08 percent of them Hindu, with Muslims (21.46 percent) and Sikhs (0.52 percent) the next largest groups. (Census 2011 district tables)
- For Chhath 2024, kept from 5 to 8 November, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation prepared 88 designated sites across the city, with Lakshman Mela Ground, Jhulelal Ghat and the Hanuman Setu old temple inspected for water police, divers, lighting, mobile toilets and an Arpan Kalash so offerings are not put into the Gomti. - The Lucknow district site traces the Bade Mangal Mela to a plague, after which the Aliganj temple’s priest was told to redirect the crowds to the new Hanuman temple, and to Aliya Begum’s charity at the first fair. (Lucknow district)
