Fifth Avatar of Vishnu · Dashavatar
Vamanaवामन
The dwarf Brahmin who humbled a mighty king with three small steps.
ॐ वामनाय नमःThe Story of Vamana
The noble asura king Bali had grown so powerful and generous that he ruled the three worlds, and even the gods were displaced. He was virtuous, yet his sway over all creation upset the balance of dharma.
Lord Vishnu came to Bali’s great sacrifice as Vamana, a small dwarf Brahmin, and asked only for as much land as he could cover in three steps. Bali, ever generous, laughed and agreed, pouring the sacred water to seal his vow.
Then Vamana grew, vast beyond measure, until with one step he covered the earth and with the second the heavens. For the third step there was no room left, and Bali, understanding who stood before him, bowed his head and offered it. The Lord, pleased by his devotion and his word, blessed Bali with an eternal place in his grace.
The Meaning
Vamana, the fifth Dashavatar, shows that the divine can fill the whole universe yet arrive in the humblest form. The story honours the king who kept his promise even when it cost him everything, teaching that surrender and integrity draw the Lord’s lasting favour. What looks small to the proud eye holds within it all the worlds.
