The daughter of the mountains, worshipped on the first day of Navratri.
ॐ देवी शैलपुत्र्यै नमःThe Story of Shailaputri
Shailaputri, the daughter of the mountain, is the first of the Navadurga, the nine forms of the Goddess worshipped over the nine nights of Navratri. She is the Goddess reborn as the daughter of Himavan, lord of the Himalayas.
She rides the bull Nandi, holding a trident in one hand and a lotus in the other, serene and steadfast as the mountains from which she comes. With her, the festival of Navratri begins.
The Meaning
Shailaputri is the pure, grounded beginning of the Goddess’s nine-fold journey, the strength and patience of the mountain. Worshipped on the first night, she steadies the devotee for the path of devotion that lies ahead.
