Lord Krishna · Lila of the Cowherd
Krishna and Govardhanगोवर्धन पर्वत
A young Krishna lifted a mountain on his finger to shelter his village from the wrath of Indra.
In the cowherd village of Vrindavan, the people prepared their yearly offering to Indra, the king of the gods and lord of rain. But the young Krishna asked them instead to honour Govardhan Hill and the land that truly nourished them, and the villagers, trusting him, did so.
Indra, enraged at being denied his worship, sent down a deluge of rain and storm to drown the village. The people fled to Krishna in terror.
Then Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan Hill upon the little finger of his left hand, holding it aloft like a vast umbrella. For seven days and nights the whole village sheltered beneath it, safe and dry, until Indra, his pride humbled, withdrew the storm and bowed before the Lord.
The Moral
The lifting of Govardhan teaches that the divine shelters those who take refuge in him, and that true worship belongs not to displays of power but to gratitude for what sustains us. It humbles pride, even the pride of a god, and shows that the Lord, in the form of a simple cowherd boy, holds up the whole world with effortless ease.
