The buffalo-demon Mahishasura had won a boon that no man or god could slay him, and in his pride he conquered the heavens and drove out the gods. Believing himself invincible, he spread terror across the three worlds.

The gods, unable to defeat him, poured their combined radiance into a single form, and from that blaze of light arose Durga, the warrior goddess, riding a lion and bearing in her many arms the weapons of all the gods.

For nine days and nights the goddess battled Mahishasura, who shifted from buffalo to lion to man to escape her. At last, on the tenth day, Durga pinned him down and slew him with her trident, restoring the heavens to the gods. This victory is celebrated as Navratri and Vijayadashami.

The Moral

The story of Durga and Mahishasura is the triumph of the divine feminine, Shakti, over arrogance and evil. It teaches that no tyranny is truly invincible, that when righteousness is in peril a greater power arises to defend it, and that the gentle Mother is also the fierce protector who will not let evil stand.
